Self Grading Forms

Self Grading Form

For this assignment of self-grading, I made a spelling test. When I finally finished the spread sheet I realized that you can not publish the quiz because I would be writing the spelling words. So this is a hypothetical test that I gave to the children orally and they answered the questions on the form.  With that being said, here is the spread sheet that goes along with the quiz, along with a picture of it below.

The You Tube video was very helpful.

The quiz is below and the students would use this form to type in their answers.

Google Docs

I decided to do a survey for this assignment. I would use this for a teacher inservice or lecture so that I can get input on what was interesting, needs improvement or not necessary.

I opened google.com/forms  and started to create my survey.  There are templates but I decided to create my own.  I picked some multiple choices, a linear scale  multiple choice and  drop down questions.

I decided to ask questions concerning the presidential candidates from 2016.  I found an "interesting facts about the candidates" page on line and chose some of the questions. I also watched this video from you tube which helped me get started .

When I finished the survey i save it and embedded it into my blog. I did change the size because it over took the blog page.  The next task is to click settings so that you can assign people to take the survey.
SAMR- Redefinition
This is the highest order of thinking skills.  The students can this type of technology to recreate new tasks.  They can send their surveys to other places other than their school and think more globally.
  ISTE

NUMBERS 1.7

In this assignment we were asked to look at the data from a Statistics class which has the prerequisite of algebra.  The professor wanted to know whether or not having college algebra made a difference in the final grade.
The null hypothesis is that the students who took college algebra before taking the class would effect their grades.
The alternate hypothesis is not taking college algebra had no effect on the student's grade.   When I entered the data, in the online calculator, the results indicated that the Null hypothesis was confirmed. Students would benefit from taking college algebra.

Kahhoot Quiz and Quizzes I rolled them into one post

Kahhoot

It is funny that we had an inservice at my school on how to use technology to assess the children. They recommended this fun program which can be an app on the computer,  phone or ipad or you log-in on the browser.
Kahoot allows you to make a quiz that the entire class can use and it is teacher controlled.  The teacher has the main quiz, the students answer the questions and the class can see how everyone answered.  The teacher then moves to the next question and it moves on the students device too.

I decided to use the Governor's Race that the 4th grade does when they are trying to study for the SOLs.  They are given a learning packet and a power point but I feel that this is more fun and the children do not know that they are being assessed.

Here are 5 questions of the quiz.

The governor's race is an example of spaced Effects.  Below is a description of spaced effects.  The questions on the test cover the information that the students were tested on in throughout the year.  It is summative and goes back to the first quarter.   This type of spaced testing helps with long term retention of material that may have been forgotten from the first quarter

Spaced Effects

Spaced schedules of testing (like spaced schedules of studying) produce better long-term retention than a single test. When a single test is administered immediately after learning, students obtain high scores, but long-term retention is reduced with a single immediate test relative to spaced testing. When a test is given immediately after learning has occurred, learners still have the newly-learned information in a primary memory system and therefore obtain high test scores. Both teachers and learners often misjudge their high scores on a test given immediately after learning as evidence of good retention, when, in fact, long-term retention suffers with this practice.

INFOGRAPHICS

For this assignment I read Vodcasts and Active-Learning Exercises in a "Flipped Classroom." The task was to develop an infographic which would summarize the article using a this method.  The study was a comparison of test scores. One way the material was presented in a traditional way.  The second group listened to a vodcast of the material in conjunction with the classroom material.

I chose Piktochart to display the information.  This webpage gave you some choices on what format you wanted to use. I picked the first one and it was free (another reason).
Quite honestly, I did not like this tool It was tedious and I could do the same thing with Word.
In terms of SAMR, since I did not feel that it really was an improvement on an existing application, I would put it on the  Augmentation level because  it is a different level but it is adding just a small amount of functionality.

In terms of ISTE this tool can be used by the students to be creative, can inspire student learning and creativity.  Teacherscan use this  technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in virtual environments.

The objective of this activity is to demonstrate the ability to use digital skills to acquire, analyze and manipulate data.

I logged onto the webpage NAEP State Comparisons and uploaded the information and put it on a spread sheet

The assignment is to  conduct a test to assess the 4th grade NAEP reading scores for Hispanic and Black students using an online t-test calculator.

Hypothesis:

H1    There is a statically significant difference between the NAEP mean scores of Black and Hispanic students on the 4th grade reading assessment.

H0: There is no difference between the mean scores.

Here are the results

Since the p score is 0.02536, the null hypothesis is rejected.

EBOLA Survey

Ebola   1.5 Likert Scale Surveys

Ebola Survey

For this assignment we were asked to look at the Ebola survey, created with Google Forms, recently posed to P3 pharmacy science students. Here is the data set that represents the results from questions 26-31.  The design of the study was a pre-post, where students completed the survey, sat through an information session about Ebola, then took the survey again.

The research question was did the intervention have any impact on the knowledge, skills or attitudes of the students?

In order to answer this question we need to compare the descriptive data and t-test results of the pre-test means for each question to the post-test descriptive and t-test results.

The first task of this assignment was to identify the variables. The first variable is an independent variable which means that it is the variable that causes change. For this problem, the independent variable is the lesson given to the students about variable. The dependent variable is the item that changes and in this problem it is the scores of the students.

The data shows that the T-Test is very high indicating that there is no significant difference in the scores. There were some scores that were high and some that were low which indicates that the information session that was presented to the students did not make that big of an impact.

In short- The informational session on Ebola seems to be unsuccessful.

Screencast O Matic

I do not like to watch myself on video but I bit the bullet and did it anyway. I chose to show a video on a program that we use in class. It is a spelling program called spelling city that helps kids learn their spelling words.
The video was 4:15 minutes. I tried to sound as upbeat as possible and tried not to bore my audience. I decided to sit, few pauses and tried to pace my rate of speech.
I left the error in the presentation because it shows that even sometimes unexpected things happen.

So here it is
In terms of SAMR this technology is being used more effectively for things like distance learning, collaborative teacher meetings where not everyone can be at the same place at the same time and to show new and upcoming programs, movies, ideas or lessons that others may not have thought about. It could transform the way that information is shared among staff.

I used google maps for fun rather than a student lesson.  I went into google maps and looked up Vineyards of Loudoun County. I thought that after this class is over, the students may want to take an adult "field trip" to one of our areas finest vineyards.

The map shows all the Loudoun countyVineyard

T-Test Numbers 1.3

T-TESTS

I unfortunately do not have the Excel Packet so after a few deep breaths into a brown paper bag I slowly made my way through this assignment.

I used the video to work the problems step by step and came up with the answers which are posted here.

I am used to Hypothesis, Null Hypothesis, T-Tests and standard deviations thanks to my stats class as an undergrad.  It has been a while since I had to do the actual math.  As a teacher we are given tests and the work is done for us.
I watched the video that shows you how to do the T test.

Hypothesis:
H1 Null: There is no correlation between White and Black Scores.
H1: There is a correlations between White and Black test scores.

H2 Null: There is no correlation between White and Hispanic Scores.
H2: There is a correlations between White and Hispanic test scores.

H3 Null: There is no correlation between Black and Hispanic Scores.
H13 There is a correlations between Black and Hispanic test scores.

It is apparent that through the results of the t-test, there is a significant difference between the three ethnic groups when looking at reading scores.  Ethnicity does impact the scores.

BatchGEO

View SU.ED Techies in a full screen map
BATCH-GEO of our Class

I added my address to the chart that was given to us in the assignment.  I copied the entire list and pasted into the GeoBatch page.  The map above is the result.  I found it very interesting that we have quite a diverse team; from Africa to England to  Arizona. After I uploaded the map, an email was sent to my SU address and I copied the link. I went to the blog and embedded it into the blog.

As I have written in other blogs, my special education class is studying The American Revolution.  I would use this to show the class where the money was coming from to finance the Revolution. I could use it as a summative quiz.  The students can add the addresses in the application after they learn what countries supported the Colonists and make another one to show what countries supported England.

In terms of SAMR, this application goes beyond the text book and maps and the children can add the locations themselves.  It is an interactive activity and visual for children who have issues with seeing "the big picture"

NUMBERS 1.3

Well, this was not easy. I am NOT good with math by any means. Here is my work.
The assignment was to analyze data related the the reading abilities of 8th graders nationwide. I computed the Standard Deviation, Mean, Median, Average, Minimum and Maximum.  I sorted them from smallest to largest for all students.
The females scored an average of 271.70 compared to the male's score of 261.53. This would indicate that females are better at reading than makes in the 8th grade nationwide.  If I were a reading teacher I would suggest an intervention for the males nationwide to increase their scores.

I'm from Pennsylvania and we scored a 272.19th overall!!

I wasn't sure how to get the program to do what I wanted it to do so I watched this tutorial .
I wanted to add my business website so I looked up another video .  Pretty easy.  I did not want to add too much personal information but overall I liked this application. SAMR -I would not use it as a resume but I would have the children use it for a presentation.  It would replace the power point and would be visually appealing.  I like the features like adding music, photos, websites and customizing.  Here is the Presi that I made.
The Excel IF Factor

In order to understand what I was supposed to do, I watched this video on how to use the If factor in excel. I was successful in transferring a number grade to a letter grade.  Here is the spreadsheet
I could use this formula in many ways in my class.  As someone whose organizational skills need help, I can have all my students grades, averages and letter grades all in one spot.  In terms of SAMR, it is replacing the old fashioned grade book. but it is in between the augmentation and modification level because the technology allows for many different features such as alphabetizing and organizing form lowest grade to highest.

In terms of the 5 different standards listed below from the ISTE standards, it relates to number 3: model digital age work and learning.

1. Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity
2. Design and develop digital age learning experiences and assessments
3. Model digital age work and learning
4. Promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility
5. Engage in professional growth and leadership

From the article about the ISTE standards for teachers.

Picasso Head

I used Picasso Head to draw a self-portrait.  I saved it and sent it to my email, but it never showed up. I did another portrait but used Jing to capture the image so that I didn't lose it again.

I would use this program in my class.  I have students who are special ed. and they do have issues with self-esteem and do not take a great deal of pride in themselves. I think this activity will be a nice supplementary activity on a social skills lesson about accepting themselves and others.

Jing Screenshot Movie

MAKING A MOVIE

This is the link to the Video  .

I used the Jing crosshairs to pull in as much of the screen that I thought would be helpful. I saved the screen capture by using screencast.com.
I saved the image to the screencast.com. The link to the video is http://screencast.com/t/Mhle0OwGy I copied the URL and pasted into the upload. The Jing 'Sun'  has 3 prongs. What does each prong do?
One is the cross hairs that captures the images. The middle one is the library that holds all the pictures and videos in one place. The third one has the options:done, send feedback, preferences, help and quit.

JING

JING
I used  Jing to capture part of an interview with a parent.  I used it to show the different themes that are present in a transcript from a parent of a student with disabilities.  I copied the image and then used the arrow features to add notes from the transcript.  This is helpful when I am trying to code information for my dissertation.  I could also send it to my committee to see if I am correctly coding the information.

Special Education Teaching and the SAMR Model

The SAMR model in every day teaching life

My students are very unique.  School and learning is something that they do not like to do.  It is very difficult to motivate them.  Until this class I would have never thought that they would use the computer or internet for anything more than typing a paper, working on a school approved math program like Dream box, or searching you tube for the latest Justin Beiber video.

After reading articles and watching the video on SAMR, I embarked on using technology in a different way in my class. At first I was using technology as a substitution for paperwork.  The kids would write papers, fill in the blanks for worksheets and watch movies on famous Americans. Useful yes, no real functional change.

Since I teach elementary school special education I am limited on how global I can get with my students.  I did have the children start a blog and each week I give them a topic and they write about it.  So far they have written about the blizzard, sports stars they admire and next week we will vote on what the topic will be. So far we have a request for best video games.  I am VERY pleased with the results so far.

In terms of the SAMR model, we are at the modification level.  If I were teaching high school we would be able to move to the redefinition level because of the less stringent rules concerning internet usage and students.  For us, the blog is a way to research, find videos, and learn the basics of writing.  The children have reached a level where they are excited to write, they want to write and they are requesting that we blog when there is a break in the day. I can not share it globally because of their age and I have a password so that parents can view the blogs.

The SAMR model has made me look at the way I use technology and how technology allows for  significant redesign of a task in the way I teach.

Excel-Why wouldn't you use it!                                                      Everyday I use Excel.  I have  a data based job where decisions are made based on the data that is collected.   I use it to determine is behavior plans are effective and whether or not the students are making progress.

I am terrible in math. I know what I am supposed to do but I just can't put it all together as easily as this.   Finding the formulas are easy and make sense.  I like the copy feature because one does not have to re-enter all the information that is in the cells.

Here is the entire spread sheet

Being a visual learner, these charts are great, especially when you need to explain the results of the data. Here is an example of what I use in school. One of students has pretty aggressive behavior. We took data on what kind of behavior at what time of day to see if there was a correlation.

It seems like my student is NOT a morning person.  He is also very bad wih transition.  The tally at the end is the total of behaviors.

Jeopardy

I use this game at least once a week with my students.  It is a fantastic way to check for understanding of the curriculum.  I pick the core curriculum as the topics and quiz the students and ask them questions about what they learned from that week.  The students keep their own score on a wipe off board which incorporates math addition problems into the game.

Jeopardy

Word Clouds

Word Cloud

I used the Word Cloud application with the Gettysburg Address.  I tried it again on a Tagul application and I liked this one much better.  I could pick the shape and color.  It is more interesting when you can incorporate different shapes to add to the presentation of the work.
This type of is helpful in the elementary school level to determine if the children can make a hypothesis as to what words Lincoln used the most and why these words were significant for the time.

Learning Styles

Learning Styles

The VARK Questionnaire

Your VARK Results

Your scores were:
  • Visual 8
  • Aural 4
  • Read/Write 1
  • Kinesthetic 7
You have a multimodal learning preference. (VK)
HYPOTHESIS: I am a visual learner.

I was not surprised by the result of this quiz.  I have taken these types of quizzes in the past  and the results are similar.

Learning Styles Are Meaningless

The main point of the article by Landers is that there are no learning styles in education.  The fact is that there is no reliable testing way of testing students on what their styles are but you can get a general idea of how students learn best.  The key to the articles is that we all have a different way of learning and as teachers, we should use a multimodal approach.

In the classroom I use more websites than aps. I do have use of an ipad and will use that as a supplemental tool. For example if we are studying Jamestown, I will go on line and show them pictures of it or do an activity about it.
You tube is a nice feature at school also because you can look up educational movies and help the students understand complex concepts.
